About our PROGRAMS

about our programs

The creativity program began in 1996 when a Montreal artist – Sandra Bailey – perceived a real need for self-expression through the creative arts among members of the St. James Drop-In Centre. Over time, she helped many new artists develop their talent and insights. We are grateful for this initiative and the contributions that our artist-members have made over the years to the program's success. We are delighted with their achievements and are indebted to them for this chance to share in their artistic vision.

The program's primary aim remains the same – to encourage and empower our artists by offering them the tools and materials they need where they can create according to their vision and their need in a warm and friendly environment. Art can heal and we at the St. James Centre are always aware of the impact it can have on our artist-members.

Over time, we have learned to respect these men and women, to follow their creative rhythm and to become aware of the huge loosening up of feelings that occurs. In these creative moments that happen when we least expect them, color takes on a special meaning and our people, each with their own stories, accomplish masterpieces.

Participants in the Creativity Program have taken part in exhibitions and community events since it began in 1996. Their work has been described as, among other things, poetic, spontaneous and full of energy and color. At such events, the artists get a priceless chance to interact with art-lovers and are encouraged by the sale of their work. (In fact art sales are a win-win situation. The buyer gets a work of art, 50 per cent of the purchase price goes to the artist and the rest goes to the Creativity program to purchase art supplies or meet other needs).

Our studio moved in April 2008! Now it is adjacent to the Centre's main community room on the third floor of St. James United Church. The space has the same area as the old studio but seems larger because of the two large alcove windows that fill our new creative space with light. Not only do we have a new space, we have new artists, new challenges and new inspirations. A lot of energy went into organizing the studio to meet our needs. However, it is working and we are proud of the art that is showcased on it's walls that show the talents of one and all.

It's a fine place for creating… it was worth the effort. Come and see for yourself. Everyone is welcome
